A PCOD afecta 5-15% das mulheres em idade reprodutiva e está associada a perturbações metabólicas como a obesidade, a resistência à insulina e um risco elevado de doenças cardiovasculares. Os contraceptivos orais, os sensibilizadores da insulina, como a metformina, os agentes indutores da ovulação, como o citrato de clomifeno e o letrozol, e os medicamentos antiandrogénicos são os pilares da atual gestão alopática. As nanoformulações emergentes de medicamentos naturais e sintéticos (como a curcumina, a metformina, o mio-inositol, o selénio e o óxido de zinco) representam uma via viável para o tratamento personalizado da PCOD.
