La sindrome antifosfolipidica (APS) è una malattia del sistema immunitario caratterizzata da un’eccessiva coagulazione del sangue nelle arterie e nelle vene e/o da alcune complicanze della gravidanza quali aborti ricorrenti, morte fetale inspiegabile o parto prematuro, con la presenza nel sangue di anticorpi antifosfolipidici quali anticorpi anticardiolipina o anticorpi anticoagulanti lupici. La sindrome antifosfolipidica è classificata in primaria e secondaria; quella primaria si riferisce alla condizione riscontrata in donne in gravidanza senza evidenza clinica o di laboratorio di un’altra condizione autoimmune definita. La APS secondaria è invece la condizione associata ad altre malattie, principalmente il lupus eritematoso sistemico (LES), e può essere riscontrata anche in altre malattie autoimmuni, occasionalmente durante infezioni, neoplasie e in risposta ad alcuni tipi di farmaci.
