Sibyls and Seers

'Sibyls and Seers' is an insightful exploration into the ancient human quest for communication with the divine. Written by the historian Edwyn Bevan, this work examines the various ways in which ancient civilizations-particularly the Greeks, Romans, and Hebrews-believed they received messages from the spirit world. Through a scholarly yet accessible lens, Bevan delves into the history of sibylline oracles, the role of the seer, and the evolving nature of prophecy across different cultures. The book analyzes the psychological and spiritual underpinnings of ancient belief systems, comparing the ecstatic utterances of the Pythia with the structured revelations of the Hebrew prophets. Bevan provides a comprehensive overview of how inspiration was understood in the Hellenistic world and how these traditions eventually influenced early Christian thought. By investigating the figures of the sibyl and the prophet, 'Sibyls and Seers' illuminates the historical development of religious authority and the persistent desire to bridge the gap between the earthly and the transcendent. This volume remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of religion, classical studies, and the enduring legacy of ancient spiritual practices. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
