“Shahnameh – O Épico dos Reis” é o poema épico do poeta persa Ferdowsi que conta o passado mitológico e histórico da Pérsia desde a criação do mundo até a conquista árabe islâmica do Irã no século VII EC. Escrito entre 977 e 1010 EC, o “Shahnameh” é uma história cativante do mundo antigo e detalha muito da história, cultura e religiões antigas da Pérsia.Como outros grandes épicos, o “Shahnameh” é também uma crônica da consciência imaginativa humana, uma mistura de mito, contos épicos e história. Esse épico leva o leitor para aventuras heroicas cheias de campeões sobre-humanos, criaturas mágicas, histórias de amor emocionantes e longas e lendárias batalhas.Este volume contém os dois primeiros terços do “Shahnameh” original, ou seja, a breve abertura mitológica (o primeiro capítulo sobre os Reis de Antigamente) e o corpo épico da obra que começa com o reinado do Rei Fereydun e termina com a morte de Rostam e o fim de seu clã. O último terço do poema, que cobre a história da dinastia persa sassânida e termina com a conquista árabe muçulmana do Irã, não está incluído neste volume.Cumpre destacar, ainda, que este volume consiste da versão inglesa do “Shahnameh”, em prosa, de Helen Zimmern, publicado em 1883, aqui traduzido para o português. Ademais, esta edição em português também contém um mapa e um glossário no final.
