L’invecchiamento demografico sta portando a un aumento significativo delle infezioni batteriche negli anziani, ponendo importanti sfide per la salute pubblica. Questo libro esplora le caratteristiche epidemiologiche e microbiologiche di queste infezioni, nonché la resistenza agli antibiotici in questa popolazione, rispetto ai giovani adulti.In uno studio retrospettivo condotto nel 2021 presso l’ospedale universitario di Monastir, abbiamo isolato 3.105 ceppi batterici, di cui 1.107 da pazienti geriatrici. I reparti di chirurgia (29,9%) e terapia intensiva (27,1%) hanno fornito la maggior parte dei campioni, con una predominanza delle urine (40,2%). I batteri Gram-negativi hanno rappresentato il 78,7% degli isolati, in particolare Escherichia coli (27,7%). La resistenza, particolarmente preoccupante, è risultata più elevata negli anziani (26,6%) che nei giovani (23,4%).Questo libro evidenzia l’urgente necessità di adattare le strategie di prevenzione e trattamento delle infezioni negli anziani, per rispondere efficacemente a questo problema crescente.
