Sexualität umfasst verschiedene Verhaltensweisen und Bedeutungen, die von mehreren Faktoren geprägt sind. Die sexuelle Fortpflanzung ist bei Wirbellosen und Wirbeltieren weitaus verbreiteter als die ungeschlechtliche Fortpflanzung. Sogar Prokaryoten und Viren zeigen 'parasexuelle Fortpflanzung'. Eine ebenso schwierige Aufgabe ist es, die evolutionäre Logik hinter den verschiedenen Balz- und Paarungsstrategien und der phänotypischen Plastizität der Geschlechtsbestimmung zu verstehen. Obwohl die sexuelle Aktivität beim Menschen bis vor kurzem für die Fortpflanzung unerlässlich war, schloss dies die nicht-reproduktive Bedeutung sexueller Beziehungen und nicht-befruchtender Kopulationen nicht aus. Warum gibt es bei den meisten Eukaryonten nur zwei Arten von Keimzellen? Warum sind nur wenige Tiere und die meisten Blütenpflanzen hermaphroditisch? Warum konkurrieren männliche Tiere bei den meisten Tieren, die auf der ganzen Welt untersucht wurden, mehr um den Zugang zu den Weibchen als umgekehrt? Dieses Buch enthält mehr Fragen als Antworten. Daher wurden verschiedene Aspekte des Geschlechts und der sexuellen Fortpflanzung erörtert, damit es sich für Biologen und diejenigen, die ein echtes Interesse an den Schlüsselfragen der Evolution der Sexualität haben, als nützlich erweisen und ihnen einen Weg zum Verständnis bieten kann.
