Vivimos en una cultura que ha elevado la ciencia a un lugar ambiguo: la respetamos como método, pero la tratamos como oráculo. A lo largo de 16 capítulos, el ensayo examina cómo la ciencia opera dentro de límites que condicionan qué se estudia y cuándo; cómo aísla variables en sistemas que solo funcionan como conjuntos; cómo redefine umbrales clínicos que convierten a millones de personas sanas en pacientes; y cómo acepta estándares de evidencia radicalmente distintos según el dominio. El ensayo distingue entre fenómeno, explicación y narrativa; entre ciencias de sistemas vivos y ciencias de sistemas inertes; y propone criterios operativos para evaluar conocimiento en la frontera entre lo demostrado y lo descartado sin evidencia suficiente. No es una crítica anticientífica. Es una exigencia directa de que la ciencia rinda cuentas por lo que ignora, descarta y condena - y de que los costes de su lentitud, sus sesgos y sus dogmas dejen de ser invisibles.
