Leo Frobenius (1873-1938) war ein deutscher Ethnologe. Von 1904 bis 1935 unternahm er verschiedene Forschungsexpeditionen nach Afrika (Deutsche Inner-Afrikanische Forschungsexpedition), insbesondere nach Togo, Tunesien, Sambia sowie in den Sudan und den Kongo. Frobenius veröffentlichte zahlreiche Werke, darunter auch eine umfangreiche Sammlung von afrikanischen Volkserzählungen. Frobenius sah die afrikanische Kultur der europäischen als gleichwertig an, was für einen Gelehrten seiner Zeit ungewöhnlich war.
