Auf der Grundlage der Rekonstruktion von Schulbiografien und familienbiografischen Hintergründen ostdeutscher Jugendlicher sowie der Deskription gesellschaftlicher Rahmenbedingungen ihres Aufwachsens geht die Autorin der Frage nach, worin der Beitrag besteht, den die Schule zur sozialen Organisation der Biografie leistet. Sie entwickelt darauf aufbauend ein Konzept der Schule als Schulsozialisationsinstanz, das die gängige sozialisationstheoretische Sicht auf Schule erweitert. Die Schule wird darin charakterisiert als Stukturierungsinstanz unterschiedlicher Anerkennungsproblematiken, die als Weichenstellungen für die biografische Entwicklung des Subjektes dienen und an die biografische Prozesse der Identitätsentwicklung gebunden sind.
