Dyskursy są różne, od stwierdzenia, że Stany Zjednoczone wyszły poza kwestię rasy, po postrasowy dyskurs neoliberalny, w którym „istotne' tożsamości są fragmentami społecznej przeszłości, a ich kontynuacja ma na celu odnowienie rasy i rasizmu. W miarę jak dyskursy te zyskują popularność w społeczeństwie amerykańskim, kwestia walki z rasizmem staje się coraz bardziej niejasna. Niniejsza książka ma na celu analizę znaczeń związanych z odrodzeniem powieści poruszających temat przechodzenia za białych od lat 80. oraz ich związku z fragmentacją linii koloru skóry. W szczególności starano się w niej ujawnić formy, w jakich powieści No Telephone to Heaven, Caucasia i The Girl Who Fell from the Sky odpowiadały na dyskursy liberalizmu rasowego i krytycznego realizmu. Opierając się na koncepcji pośredniości Santiago i koncepcji performatywności Butler, niniejsze opracowanie uznaje wybrane powieści za bogate źródło wiedzy na temat zmieniającego się myślenia rasowego w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
