Les dernières décennies ont vu un changement dans la pensée raciale aux États-Unis. Les discours varient entre l’affirmation selon laquelle les États-Unis ont dépassé la question raciale et le discours néolibéral post-racial selon lequel les identités essentielles sont des fragments du passé social et leur persistance a pour fonction de renouveler la race et le racisme. À mesure que ces discours gagnent du terrain dans la société américaine, la question de la lutte contre le racisme devient plus délicate. Cet ouvrage cherche à analyser les significations attachées à la renaissance des romans traitant du concept de passer pour blanc à partir des années 80 et sa relation avec la fragmentation de la ligne de couleur. Plus précisément, il s’est efforcé de dévoiler les formes sous lesquelles les romans No Telephone to Heaven, Caucasia et The Girl Who Fell from the Sky ont répondu aux discours du libéralisme racial et du réalisme critique. S’appuyant sur le concept d’ entre-deux de Santiago et le concept de performativité de Butler, cette étude reconnaît les romans choisis comme de riches sources d’informations sur l’évolution de la pensée raciale aux États-Unis.
