Un réseau de capteurs est une structure composée d’éléments de détection, de calcul et de communication qui offre à l’utilisateur la possibilité d’observer et d’agir en réponse aux événements dans un environnement spécifié. L’utilisateur appartient généralement à l’entité gouvernementale, civile, industrielle et commerciale. Les nœuds sont dispersés dans l’environnement comme un système biologique, le monde physique ou un cadre de technologie de l’information (TI). Les systèmes de capteurs basés sur le réseau sont considérés comme l’avenir par les observateurs car ce sont des technologies importantes qui connaitront les applications basées sur ce type de système dans les prochaines années.
