Badanie to przeprowadzono w celu wyjaśnienia zmienności genetycznej wśród populacji Phlebotomus orienanlis, wektora leiszmaniozy trzewnej, pochodzącej z trzech różnych regionów geograficznych Sudanu. Muchówki zostały zebrane w stanach White Nile, Gedarif, Blue Nile i Khartoum przy użyciu pułapek CDC i lepkich papierowych pułapek. Okazy zebrane z tych obszarów zostały poddane analizie przy użyciu metody szybkiej amplifikacji polimorficznego DNA - łańcuchowej reakcji polimerazy (RAPD-PCR). RAPD-PCR przeprowadzono przy użyciu 30 losowych starterów. Populacja każdego badanego obszaru wykazała charakterystyczne diagnostyczne pasma DNA. Ponadto P. orientalis wykazywał różny poziom różnorodności w loci RAPD. Dodatkowo zaobserwowano wyraźne skupiska P. orientalis w oparciu o ich regiony geograficzne.
