Die heterogene Photokatalyse wird seit einigen Jahren aufgrund ihres großen Potenzials zur Lösung sowohl von Umweltverschmutzungs- als auch von anhaltenden Energieproblemen intensiv erforscht. ZnO hat sich als bedeutender Photokatalysator zweifellos als äußerst vielversprechend für den Abbau verschiedener organischer Schadstoffe erwiesen. Die hohe Effizienz von ZnO in der Photokatalyse erforderte eine geeignete Modifikationstechnik, die die Elektron-Loch-Rekombination minimierte und die Photonenabsorption maximierte. Um die Elektron-Loch-Trennung im angeregten Zustand weiter zu verbessern, hat sich die Dotierung mit Seltenerdmetallen (RE) als beliebte Methode erwiesen, um die Photoaktivität von ZnO unter sichtbarem/Sonnenlicht zu fördern. Dieses Buch konzentriert sich auf die Prinzipien und Mechanismen der ZnO-Photokatalyse sowie auf die jüngsten Erfolge bei der RE-dotierten ZnO für den photochemischen Abbau von organischen Stoffen in wässrigen Lösungen. Eine originelle experimentelle Arbeit, der photochemische Abbau von Phenol durch RE-dotierte ZnO-hierarchische Mikro-/Nanokugeln (RE/ZnO; RE = Cer (Ce), Europium (Eu) und Neodym (Nd)), wurde umfassend als Fallstudie diskutiert, die darauf hindeuten kann, dass RE-dotiertes ZnO vielversprechende, durch sichtbares Licht angetriebene Photokatalysatoren für die Sanierung von mit organischen Stoffen kontaminiertem Wasser sind.
