Leonardo da Vinci’s robotic sketches in the 1500s paved the way for robotics, now a key part of medicine. First introduced in 1992, surgical robots saw a major breakthrough with FDA approval of the Da Vinci robot in 1997. This system, controlled by a surgeon using 3D imaging, performs precise, minimally invasive procedures and is widely used for prostatectomy in the U.S.Despite existing technologies like digital impressions and implant surgery simulation, robotics hasn’t entered dentistry yet. A dental robot would combine a drilling device with navigation and imaging, enhancing accuracy, speed, and safety. Robotics could revolutionize dentistry by improving efficiency, but concerns over disrupting the current market may be slowing adoption. While robots can’t diagnose or plan treatments, they can enhance precision and workflow. Forward-thinking dentists are already leveraging technology as a valuable aid, positioning themselves as future leaders in the field.
