Selon Garrahy (2001), les enseignants sont les principaux pourvoyeurs de conseils en matière de carrière, aidant les élèves à choisir des matières et leur fournissant des connaissances sur les carrières. Selon Maree et Beck (2004), les élèves qui ne reçoivent que peu ou pas d’encouragements de la part de leurs enseignants au niveau secondaire ont peu de chances de mener à bien la carrière qu’ils souhaitent. Selon Elizabeth (2012), les enseignants jouent un rôle dans les décisions de carrière des élèves de l’enseignement secondaire en leur fournissant des informations et en les conseillant sur la manière d’obtenir ces emplois. Les enseignants évaluent les compétences des élèves, les informent sur les matières qu’ils étudient et leur apprennent à progresser dans la profession qu’ils ont choisie (Kisilu Kimani & Combo, 2012).
