De acordo com Garrahy (2001), os professores são os principais fornecedores de aconselhamento de carreira, ajudando os alunos na seleção das disciplinas e fornecendo conhecimentos sobre a carreira. De acordo com Maree e Beck (2004), é pouco provável que os alunos com pouco ou nenhum incentivo de carreira por parte dos professores do ensino secundário consigam alcançar as carreiras que desejam no futuro. De acordo com Elizabeth (2012), os professores desempenham um papel nas decisões de carreira dos alunos do ensino secundário, fornecendo-lhes informações e aconselhando-os sobre a obtenção de tais empregos. Os professores avaliam as competências dos alunos, informam-nos sobre as matérias que estão a estudar e ensinam-lhes como avançar com as profissões que escolheram (Kisilu Kimani & Combo, 2012).
