Die Studie liegt im Spannungsfeld von qualitativer Erwachsenenbildungs-, Migrations-, Vereins- und Biographieforschung. Sie versucht, am Fall spanischer Migranten eine institutionengebundene Vereinsperspektive mit einer subjektbezogenen Biographieperspektive zu verschränken und dadurch - üblicherweise - getrennt behandelte Forschungsansätze miteinander zu verbinden. Methodisch bedient sie sich des Instrumentariums der teilnehmenden Beobachtung und der biographischen Analyse. Sowohl in den biographischen Entwürfen von Migranten als auch in ihren vereinskulturellen Gesellungsformen können Prozesse der Risikobearbeitung, Übergangsbewältigung, Biographisierung oder Pädagogisierung rekonstruiert werden, wie sie für Institutionen und Biographien einer modernisierten Moderne typisch sind. Der Autor analysiert in Fallstudien z.B. das Bemühen um Solidarität im Verein, um weibliche Emanzipation und den Umgang mit der Kollektivgeschichte der Migranten.
