Le monde se réchauffe et les conditions météorologiques deviennent de plus en plus instables et extrêmes, et le consensus scientifique écrasant est que l’utilisation par l’homme des combustibles fossiles et de leurs dérivés est un élément clé de ce changement climatique. Le frottement, l’usure et la lubrification jouent un rôle majeur dans la consommation d’énergie et, par conséquent, la réduction du frottement et de l’usure et l’utilisation d’une lubrification écologique constituent la voie la plus directe pour diminuer la consommation d’énergie et la pollution et, ainsi, contribuer à un meilleur environnement pour tout le monde. Dans ce contexte, de nouveaux matériaux autolubrifiants ont été développés au cours des dernières décennies pour remplacer l’utilisation de lubrifiants liquides nocifs. Cependant, lorsque les pièces sont exposées à des températures élevées, une défaillance prématurée des composants se produit en raison de la faible résistance à l’oxydation des revêtements et/ou de la diffusion rapide ou totale de l’élément lubrifiant à la surface. Ce livre vise donc à développer un système de revêtement universel capable d’assurer une lubrification à long terme et pour une large gamme de températures.
