Im folgenden Jahr, 1873, kam es zu einer gewagten öffentlichen Erklärung von zwei Damen und einem Herrn, diese monumentale Aufgabe zu erfüllen, diesmal durch eine noch höhere Wette, die Foggs Einsatz verdreifachte.Der einzige Herr, der sich bereit erklärte, war einer von Foggs wenigen verbliebenen Freunden im Reform Club, der ebenso exzentrische, aber relativ unbekannte Richard Haze. Entschlossen, die Überzeugungen seines Freundes zu rehabilitieren und seinen eigenen Platz in der Geschichte einzunehmen, selbst wenn sein Wohlstand auf dem Spiel stand, beschloss Haze, die Dienste eines Kammerdieners in Anspruch zu nehmen, der über ausreichende Erfahrung und Kenntnisse der anderen Seite der Welt verfügte, um Foggs Schicksal zu vermeiden. Er fand diese Person in dem philippinischen Gastarbeiter Juan Ruiz, der hinter seiner fröhlichen Fassade als Diener und seinen begrenzten Englisch- und Spanischkenntnissen ein streng gehütetes Geheimnis verbarg - er war der wahre Bankräuber.
