’On dit qu’un tour du monde prend généralement 365 jours, mais serait-ce possible en seulement quatre-vingts ? Le gentleman britannique Phileas Fogg a rendu le monde fou avec son pari incroyable de faire le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours, au lendemain du célèbre braquage de la Banque d’Angleterre. Son aventure sensationnelle s’est toutefois soldée par un échec cuisant pour lui, puisqu’il s’est retrouvé avec 20 000 livres de moins après avoir terminé son voyage au 81e jour. Cette légère perte ne semblait toutefois pas décourager la population de vouloir lui donner raison. L’année suivante, en 1873, deux dames et un gentleman firent une déclaration publique audacieuse, s’engageant à accomplir cette tâche monumentale, cette fois-ci avec un pari encore plus colossal, triplant la mise de Fogg.Le seul homme à se porter volontaire était l’un des rares amis de Fogg encore présents au Reform Club, Richard Haze, tout aussi excentrique mais relativement inconnu. Déterminé à racheter les convictions de son ami et à se faire une place dans l’histoire, même si sa fortune était en jeu, Haze décida de s’adjoindre les services d’un valet possédant suffisamment d’expérience et de connaissances sur l’autre bout du monde pour éviter le sort de Fogg. Il trouva cette personne en la personne de Juan Ruiz, un travailleur migrant philippin qui, sous ses airs joyeux de valet et sa maîtrise limitée de l’anglais et de l’espagnol, cachait un secret bien gardé : il était le véritable voleur de la banque.
