El objeto del libro es el análisis de las cerca de 2000 películas que se filmaron en España entre 1929 (un año después de la primera película sonora) y 1969. Otro propósito, quizás el más interesante y positivo, es destacar y señalar las cintas que tienen mayor valor y que merecen ser 'rescatadas' para ser vistas y gozar de ellas, mucho más si se ven por primera vez. Unas ciento cincuenta películas no merecen permanecer sepultadas entre las mayoritariamente malas o regulares. Rafael Gómez Pérez las detalla y señala para que jóvenes o mayores, aficionados al cine todos, disfruten de su visión. Las introducciones, los apéndices y la selección de imágenes ayudarán a estos objetivos y a profundizar en aspectos como el contexto social, político y estético del cine español, su utilización para fines diversos, los directores, actores o la base literaria (en bastantescasos, libretos de zarzuelas) de muchos de los guiones. 10
