L’oggetto di questo libro è la concezione della res publica e della dittatura durante la transizione dalla Repubblica romana all’Impero. Sotto forma di ricerca di sintesi, copre in parallelo il percorso della politica durante il periodo di transizione dal governo repubblicano al potere autocratico a Roma. Prende quindi in considerazione le caratteristiche del corpo istituzionale che governava la Repubblica, le sfaccettature del potere dittatoriale e le influenze delle due figure principali di questa transizione: Giulio Cesare, il dittatore, e Ottaviano Augusto, il primo imperatore. Dall’obiettivo principale, che si basa sull’analisi della Res Publica e della dittatura nei governi di Augusto e Cesare e sull’esposizione delle conseguenti trasformazioni politico-costituzionali romane, derivano obiettivi specifici: descrivere la nuova situazione che la Repubblica si trovò ad affrontare con l’ascesa al potere di Cesare e il contesto storico; determinare in che modo la dittatura di Cesare e il progressivo accentramento del potere contribuirono alle trasformazioni del sistema politico del tempo; caratterizzare i cambiamenti nella concezione della Res Publica con l’avvento del principato di Ottaviano Augusto.
