The aim of this thesis is to encourage themultidimensional approach in the study of socialidentities. ’Identisation’ is presented as anamalgamation of factors, forces and interests thatshould not be analysed in isolation or reduced to amono-causal approach. These theoretical claims arebased on an in-depth and long term empiricalexploration of the processes of identisation in thespecific institutional context of Tatar and non-Tatargymnásias (secondary schools) in the Republic ofTatarstan, part of the Russian Federation. Datageneration consisted of semi-structured andunstructured interviewing and long- term participantobservation in Kazan (the capital of Tatarstan).Analysis of the data shows that a complex dialecticemerges between political discourse, institutionalpraxis and quotidian representations, a dialectic andinterrelation that often has been ignored in thestudy of identities. In Tatarstan it is a dialecticbetween processes of Russification, Sovietisation andTatarisation which show the need to devote specialattention to the historical background in order to beable to analyse the current dynamics andrepresentations.
