Renewing Christian Humanism proposes a constructive and harmonious relationship between the sacred and the secular, facilitating healthy interaction between faith and culture. Such a vision allows Christians to engage and contribute more constructively in the world, including the world of education, and to take a winsome approach to evangelization. John Sullivan calls for a critical appreciation and a creative appropriation of Christian humanism that equips people for a discerning engagement with contemporary culture. He shows that Christian humanism can contribute to a humanizing approach to education that addresses the technocratic mentality and is also open to the transcendent. The renewal of Christian humanism does not mean conservation or restoration. It is not about embalming the past but about seeing its potential as a resource to revitalize, in the present context, Christian approaches to education and culture, so long as it opens itself to external sources as well as those within the living tradition of Christianity. This renewal is open to what is old as well as what is new, being an expression of both continuity and creativity. 6
