Lights for the Path introduces a range of hidden figures from the Catholic tradition – men and women who, across the centuries and in diverse contexts, have illuminated how Christians respond to the world. The author demonstrates the enduring relevance of their example and wisdom for the philosophy and practice of Catholic education today. These remarkable people, from educators to poets and prophets, including Maximus the Confessor, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Edith Stein, Elizabeth Jennings, Paulo Freire, Étienne Gilson, Marshall McLuhan and Walter Ong, left a legacy that continues to inspire to this day.
John Sullivan was professor of Christian education from 2002 to 2013 at Liverpool Hope University, where he is now emeritus professor. He is the author and editor of ten books, the most recent being Steward of a Living Tradition (Pickwick 2025).
