In Brasile si è trovato poco sullo studio delle relazioni tra i costrutti di rendimento scolastico, competenza sociale - nomi sociometrici - ed empatia, che si riferiscono al funzionamento sociale, affettivo e cognitivo degli individui. L’obiettivo principale di questo lavoro è analizzare se studenti con prestazioni scolastiche diverse differiscono nelle scelte e nei rifiuti dei compagni di classe e nell’autopercezione dell’empatia. A tal fine, l’autore presenta uno studio che ha coinvolto 217 adolescenti di età compresa tra i 10 e i 14 anni, suddivisi in tre gruppi con diversi livelli di rendimento scolastico. Sono state utilizzate tre misure. Il rendimento scolastico degli studenti è stato analizzato utilizzando i voti dei quattro trimestri scolastici; il loro status sociometrico è stato indagato in relazione ai loro coetanei; è stato utilizzato uno strumento di valutazione dell’empatia auto-riportato. I risultati hanno mostrato che i gruppi con rendimento scolastico differivano in tutte le variabili della misura sociometrica, a differenza delle risposte al questionario self-report sull’empatia.
