Seit dem letzten Jahrzehnt ist die physiologische Rolle von Relaxin beim Mann so gut erforscht, dass Relaxin nicht mehr ausschließlich als Schwangerschaftshormon betrachtet werden kann. Es wurde nachgewiesen, dass Relaxin eine physiologische Rolle bei der Spermienmotilität spielt. Dieses Buch enthält die erste Studie, die untersucht hat, dass Relaxin nicht nur für die Spermienmotilität, sondern auch für die Kapazitation und die Akrosomreaktion eine entscheidende Rolle spielt. Dieses Buch befasst sich zudem mit den durch Relaxin induzierten intrazellulären Signalkaskaden, die die Kapazitation und die Akrosomreaktion stimulieren. Wir sind der Ansicht, dass nun der richtige Zeitpunkt für die Zusammenstellung dieses Buches gekommen ist. Es zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen anspruchsvollen Ansätze gegenüberzustellen, die unabhängig voneinander in verschiedenen akademischen Einrichtungen, Forschungslabors für Human- und Tierfortpflanzung sowie Zentren für künstliche Befruchtung weltweit entwickelt wurden. Insbesondere dankt der Erstautor seinem Postdoktorandenbetreuer Prof. Dr. Karl Schellander für dessen Unterstützung und bedankt sich zudem bei der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung für die Gewährung eines Postdoktorandenstipendiums während eines Teils der Forschungsarbeit in Deutschland.
