Un large éventail d’amas chimiques a été analysé et classé. Au cours de ce processus, il a été découvert que les éléments du groupe principal obéissent à la série 4n tandis que les métaux de transition suivent la série 14n. Cependant, au cours de l’analyse ultérieure des amas chimiques, on a découvert que les électrons de valence des amas peuvent également obéir à la série 6n pour les éléments du groupe principal et à la série 16n pour les amas de métaux de transition. Dans ce livre, l’accent a été mis sur un nouveau type de séries, simplement décrites comme des séries diagonales de clusters. Quelques exemples illustrant la relation diagonale des électrons de valence des clusters sont présentés dans le tableau 2.
