A atribuição de terrenos tem sido e continua a ser um problema para as cidades africanas em geral e, em particular, para as zonas urbanas do Zimbabué. Ao longo da história, a escassez e a pressão sobre os terrenos para habitação resultaram em sistemas complexos de distribuição de terrenos. O aumento da população tem desempenhado um papel importante na complexidade da atribuição de terrenos. A complexa distribuição de terras resultante é uma mistura de processos formais e informais de distribuição de terras em que a relação entre os dois não é clara. A investigação tem como objetivo compreender a intersecção entre os sistemas formais e informais de distribuição. Com base nos pontos fortes dos resultados da investigação, o nexo entre o formal e o informal é amplamente categorizado em dois: coexistência conflitual e harmoniosa/acomodativa. No entanto, os sistemas legislativos do Zimbabué controlam geralmente os processos de atribuição de terras estritamente informais através de demolições e despejos. As acções revelam a existência de uma relação conflituosa entre as regras formais e as regras informais, sendo que, na maioria dos casos, as regras informais assumem o controlo das informais.
