Questa tesi esamina criticamente la reinterpretazione di personaggi femminili di spicco della mitologia indiana nella narrativa indiana contemporanea in lingua inglese, evidenziando come queste rielaborazioni rispondano a preoccupazioni revisioniste femministe. Analizzando sei opere selezionate, questo studio indaga come queste narrazioni sfidino le ideologie patriarcali incorporate nei testi originali del Ramayana e del Mahabharata. Lo studio si colloca nell’ambito della mitologia revisionista femminista, un approccio critico che mira a riesaminare e riscrivere le narrazioni mitologiche tradizionali attraverso una lente femminista. L’idea alla base di questo approccio non è semplicemente quella di riproporre vecchie storie, ma di decostruire i pregiudizi di genere esistenti e di ricostruire i personaggi femminili con una maggiore agency e individualità. Queste rivisitazioni contemporanee permettono di rivalutare il ruolo delle donne nella mitologia, enfatizzandone la forza, l’intelligenza e la resilienza piuttosto che ritrarle semplicemente come secondarie rispetto agli eroi maschili.
