Os géis de carbono obtidos por polimerização do resorcinol (R) e do formaldeído (F) são materiais muito atractivos, uma vez que é possível adaptar uma grande variedade de estruturas porosas a aplicações específicas, modificando as condições de síntese. No entanto, a aplicação de géis de carbono RF à escala industrial é principalmente limitada pelo seu elevado custo e pela longa duração do processo de síntese. Este livro mostra as estratégias aplicadas em diferentes fases do processo global, síntese, gelificação-cura e secagem, que foram desenvolvidas com o objetivo de reduzir o custo e o tempo de processamento dos géis de carbono. A utilização de monómeros mais baratos do que o resorcinol, como o fenol ou os cresóis, ou de recursos naturais pode levar à formação de géis de carbono com uma estrutura semelhante à dos géis de carbono RF, selecionando as condições de síntese adequadas. As fases de gelificação e cura podem ser encurtadas utilizando um ácido inorgânico como catalisador de polimerização ou aplicando a técnica de ultra-sons durante a síntese. Finalmente, são revistas algumas técnicas de secagem, como a secagem por micro-ondas ou por ar convectivo, mais baratas e/ou mais rápidas do que a secagem por CO2 supercrítico.
