Lo scopo di questo studio di caso è scoprire i fattori che, storicamente, hanno influenzato i risultati degli studenti afroamericani, in modo negativo o positivo, con un’attenzione diretta al periodo immediatamente successivo all’integrazione. Questa ricerca serve a capire perché gli studenti afroamericani continuano a rimanere indietro dal punto di vista accademico rispetto alle loro controparti bianche. La ricerca presentata in questo studio evidenzia i deficit di opportunità riscontrati all’inizio dell’istruzione dei neri in America. Si concentra in particolare sulle qualità benefiche della scuola nera segregata che sono andate perse durante il processo di integrazione delle scuole pubbliche. Oggi gli educatori parlano continuamente di colmare il divario di risultati; tuttavia, poche ricerche si sono concentrate sui fattori che ostacolano i risultati degli studenti afroamericani da una prospettiva sociale, culturale e storica. Sono stati intervistati dieci studenti neri che hanno frequentato la Houston County Training/High School e/o una scuola nera nella contea di Houston, in Georgia, durante la segregazione legale, e che hanno vissuto il processo di integrazione nella Perry High School; i dati sono stati triangolati con documenti storici e dati scolastici.
