O objetivo deste estudo de caso é descobrir os factores que, historicamente, têm influenciado negativa ou positivamente o desempenho dos alunos afro-americanos, com um enfoque direto no período imediatamente a seguir à integração. Esta investigação serve de precursor para compreender por que razão os alunos afro-americanos continuam a ficar atrás dos seus colegas brancos em termos académicos. A investigação apresentada neste estudo aponta para os défices de oportunidades sentidos no início da educação dos negros na América. Centra-se especificamente nas qualidades benéficas da escola negra segregada que se perderam durante o processo de integração das escolas públicas. Hoje em dia, os educadores falam continuamente em colmatar o fosso entre os resultados escolares; no entanto, pouca investigação tem incidido sobre os factores que impedem os resultados escolares dos alunos afro-americanos numa perspetiva social, cultural e histórica. Foram entrevistados dez alunos negros que frequentaram a Houston County Training/High School e/ou uma escola negra em Houston County, Geórgia, durante a segregação legal, e que passaram pelo processo de integração na Perry High School, tendo os dados sido triangulados com documentos históricos e dados escolares.
