O reconhecimento do direito linguístico ao abrigo do direito internacional dos direitos humanos tem sido uma questão delicada há muito tempo. Persistindo nesta lacuna, os Estados não respeitaram nem adoptaram medidas adequadas que assegurassem a utilização da própria língua, pelo menos a um determinado nível possível. A ausência de uma lei internacional de direitos humanos compreensivelmente acordada sobre direitos linguísticos, dilemas políticos e económicos, entre outros, são todos utilizados como desculpa para o não reconhecimento e respeito dos direitos linguísticos por parte da maioria dos Estados. Assim, este livro esforça-se por analisar criticamente os vários argumentos que podem estabelecer firmemente o reconhecimento do direito à língua ao abrigo do direito internacional dos direitos humanos. Vários tratados internacionais e leis brandas que podem ser utilizados para proteger os direitos linguísticos, directa ou indirectamente, são analisados. Além disso, é feita uma tentativa de revelar a extensão da protecção e reconhecimento concedidos aos direitos linguísticos nas Maurícias, bem como sob a forma linguística e étnica do Federalismo Etíope. Este livro vai servir a necessidade e o interesse de investigadores de direitos humanos, activistas de direitos humanos, profissionais do direito, políticos e estudantes de política.
