Die Arbeit an sich hat nicht mit Präsident Wilson zu tun, sondern beschäftigt sich mit Rassismus und der Unterdrückung gegen die schwarze Bevölkerung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Hauptpunkte sind die systematische Einteilung und Analyse der Unterdrückung in jeweils das politische, wirtschaftliche und soziale Subsystem. Umrandet wird die Darstellung von Ausführungen über die geistigen Grundlagen des Rassismus, einer Darstellung der Phase der Reconstruction in Bezug auf das Thema sowie einem kurzen Überblick über die wichtigsten schwarzen Meinungsführer der Zeit.
