Critical Issues in Anglophone Cameroonian Poetry réunit huit poètes camerounais anglophones majeurs que l’on peut classer en trois catégories : criers , 'sayers' et 'sages'. Dans la première catégorie, les crieurs, nous avons John Ngong Kum, Bate Besong, Gahlia Gwangwa’a, Fru Doh et Mathew Takwi ; dans la deuxième, les diseurs, Bongasu-Tanla-Kishani et Nol Alembong, et dans la troisième, les sages, Bernard Fonlon. Les crieurs, comme l’indique leur taxonomie, crient leur indignation. Ils sont les voix inconsolables qui font écho à la douleur collective, qui enregistrent la sensation brute du mal. Leur poésie bouillonne de la fureur de la trahison de la confiance des indigènes. C’est une poésie d’accusation et de rejet. Les diseurs ne sont pas moins attentifs au mal, mais ils ont tendance à être d’un tempérament plus serein. Ils disent plutôt qu’ils ne crient, et c’est peut-être pour cette raison que leur message passe plus facilement. Quant aux sages, ils sont la colonne vertébrale de la survie collective. Ils voient loin, guidés par ce qu’ils savent du passé, et donnent la direction à suivre. Enfin, la thèse ultime de ce livre est que la politisation de la poésie camerounaise anglophone n’a pas conduit à un déclin de son art.
