Im Modellprojekt „Bildungshaus 3 - 10' kooperieren LehrerInnen des Anfangsunterrichts eng mit ErzieherInnen des Kindergartens. Bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung gemeinsamer Bildungseinheiten für Kindergarten- und Grundschulkinder werden LehrerInnen dabei mit pädagogischen Konzepten aus der Elementarpädagogik konfrontiert. Doris Drexl untersucht in zwei Studien, inwiefern sich dadurch die Einstellungen zur Unterrichtsgestaltung ändern und ob sich die Qualität des Anfangsunterrichts verbessert. Die Ergebnisse einer Interviewstudie mit am Projekt teilnehmenden LehrerInnen zeigen u. a. ein Bemühen um offenere Unterrichtsformen, um stärkere Berücksichtigung der Individualität des Kindes und einen erweiterten Blick auf das Kind. Eine umfangreiche Unterrichtsbeobachtungsstudie in knapp 60 Grundschulen weist zudem darauf hin, dass die Qualität des Anfangsunterrichts in Modellschulen in einigen Qualitätsmerkmalen besser ist als in entsprechenden Vergleichsschulen.
