L’utilisation de la vision comme source de survie et d’adaptation à l’environnement est un mécanisme évolutif. De la lumière qui pénètre dans la rétine à la phototransduction, une série de transformations se produisent afin de permettre un traitement visuel spatial. La présence de troubles permet de comprendre le traitement 'normal', car les maladies peuvent être considérées comme une version 'réduite' d’un fonctionnement sain. L’utilisation de la psychophysique visuelle pour évaluer la vision spatiale nous permet de localiser et d’observer le fonctionnement des récepteurs, en différenciant le fonctionnement médiatisé par les cônes et les bâtonnets, par exemple. Ainsi, la compréhension de la vision spatiale est d’une grande importance pour les neurosciences, car il est possible de faire des parallèles sur les mécanismes neurophysiologiques et leurs relations avec les troubles neuropsychiatriques, par exemple. Dans ce livre, nous aborderons plus particulièrement la relation entre la psychophysique visuelle et la schizophrénie.
