Przemoc ze względu na płeć, w tym handel ludźmi w celu wykorzystywania seksualnego, narusza prawa kobiet i dziewcząt, utrudnia rozwój i jest obrazą ludzkości.Handel ludźmi jest wyraźnie wspomniany w odniesieniu do eliminacji wszelkich form przemocy wobec kobiet i dziewcząt we wszystkich środowiskach i chociaż dyrektywa 2011/36/UE i inne instrumenty europejskie nie kategoryzują handlu seksualnego jako przestępstwa związanego z przemocą ze względu na płeć, uznają związek między tymi dwoma zjawiskami i znaczenie podejścia opartego na płci.
