Told through poetry alone, Vicious Virginia is the second book in the Prophetic Poems series, which revolves around the life of the author. He made it through one of the country’s and military’s most demanding academic programs, time on a submarine, and countless heartbreaks. Now, he is sent to the coast of Virginia. However, medical ailments remove him from his job, and as he waits to leave the military life behind, the struggles only worsen, as the author faces himself and life in a way completely unlike South Carolina. To add to it, his family life of chaos and torment evolves into a situation far beyond his control, reaching a horrendous pinnacle. On top of it, he battles with God, as well as his newly engaged fiancée as they date from afar. To make matters worse, he is falsely accused and framed of a crime he did not commit, and his separation is delayed.Even more vaguely memoir-based than the first book, these poems are a collection of abstract and dark poetry, covering the transfer from South Carolina to back home and then to Virginia. Then, finally, to the next major change in the author’s life.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
