Os métodos de propagação tradicionais permitem a multiplicação clonal de genótipos de interesse, mas com taxas de propagação relativamente baixas, o que explica o facto de a introdução de um novo genótipo nas práticas agrícolas poder demorar vários anos. A técnica da cultura de tecidos surgiu como a melhor ferramenta alternativa nas últimas três décadas para ultrapassar este problema. Permite a produção rápida de um grande número de plantas, mesmo quando a espécie tem normalmente baixas taxas de multiplicação. Ao mesmo tempo, o espaço necessário para essa multiplicação é consideravelmente menor. Esta aplicação é, por conseguinte, ideal para a multiplicação maciça de espécies ou genótipos com potencial comercial, quer se trate de plantas da agricultura ou da horticultura, como flores frescas cortadas, plantas ornamentais ou árvores de fruto. A propagação massiva de plantas tem sido tradicionalmente realizada em meio sólido, no entanto, nos últimos anos, as culturas em meio líquido com o objetivo de propagação massiva de plantas surgiram como uma alternativa, o que permite reduzir os custos em relação ao número de subcultivos e às perdas associadas à manipulação e contaminação, mas também devido à redução do espaço.
