Intimate relationships can face unique challenges when one partner has Asperger’s Syndrome, yet the experiences of adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and their partners have received far less attention than research on children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This book explores the dynamics of Asperger’s Syndrome and neurotypical relationships through Grounded Theory, focusing on prompt dependency and its effects on communication and interaction. The resulting theory and theoretical model reveal a recurring cycle driven by contrasting relational needs: the neurotypical partner’s need for reciprocal interaction and the Asperger’s partner’s tendency to avoid it. By examining how these opposing patterns shape relationships, the study provides valuable insights into the experiences of both partners. It also highlights the need for greater awareness, understanding, and more effective support and clinical interventions.
