Autyzm stał się obecnie jednym z najpowszechniejszych zaburzeń neurologicznych na świecie. Pomimo wielu wysiłków medycznych i psychologicznych oraz programów edukacyjnych, liczba przypadków autyzmu rośnie z roku na rok. Autyzm jest zaburzeniem neurologicznym, dlatego znalezienie skutecznego sposobu leczenia wydaje się trudne. Ponadto, zwłaszcza w krajach rozwijających się, brakuje informacji na temat autyzmu i sposobów postępowania z osobami autystycznymi, przez co wiele z nich nie ma dostępu do edukacji i nie ma możliwości komunikowania się z innymi ludźmi. Powoduje to problemy społeczne, ekonomiczne i psychologiczne w społeczeństwie. Od 2000 roku podjęto kilka prób zbadania potrzeb osób z autyzmem w zakresie środowiska fizycznego związanego z projektowaniem architektonicznym. Jednak zaburzenie to wymaga dalszych badań i obserwacji, aby dowiedzieć się, jakie cechy przestrzenne mogą poprawić ich wyniki w procesie uczenia się i zachęcić ich do uczestnictwa w normalnym życiu. Celem niniejszego badania jest przygotowanie zrozumiałej listy kontrolnej dla architektów i projektantów wnętrz, która będzie wykorzystywana przy projektowaniu przestrzeni dla osób z autyzmem.
