L’objectif principal de cet ouvrage est de comprendre le comportement du trafic automobile dans une région touchée par des événements macroéconomiques. La demande de trafic de véhicules commerciaux et de passagers sur l’autoroute BR-101/RJ est prévue jusqu’en 2020 à l’aide d’une régression linéaire, avec l’appui du logiciel libre R. Les variables explicatives utilisées sont la population, le PIB de la région et la production de pétrole dans le bassin de Campos. Pour les analyses, les données utilisées sont réparties par gare de péage, par type de véhicule et par zone d’influence, qui comprend certaines municipalités. La simulation des données à l’aide du logiciel ARENA version 14.0 conclut que le nombre de véhicules commerciaux augmentera considérablement, ce qui allongera le temps d’attente dans les files d’attente des gares de péage, en particulier à Casimiro de Abreu, où le temps maximum sera de plus de dix-neuf minutes. Pour réduire l’impact sur les parties prenantes, l’étude suggère certaines mesures pour la planification à moyen terme de l’autoroute, telles que l’encouragement de l’utilisation de tags pour le paiement électronique et l’augmentation du nombre de cabines pour le service manuel.
