Die Umwelterziehung kümmert sich um die Beziehung des Menschen zu seinen Mitmenschen sowie um die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, sollte die Umwelterziehung bestimmte Standards entwickeln, die die Menschen dazu anregen, die Umwelt zu schützen, ohne Angst vor dem Gesetz zu haben. Die Ziele der Umwelt liegen auf vier Ebenen - ökologische Grundlagen, konzeptionelles Bewusstsein, Untersuchung und Bewertung sowie Schulung und Anwendung von Handlungsfähigkeiten. In letzter Zeit haben einige Forscher zu unserem Verständnis von Verhaltensänderungen beigetragen, was darauf hindeutet, dass es drei Ebenen von Variablen gibt, nämlich Eintritts-, Eigentums- und Befähigungsvariablen, die mehr oder weniger linear wirken.
