A programação de tarefas em oficina consiste na alocação de máquinas ao longo do tempo para realizar um conjunto de tarefas, de forma a minimizar/maximizar uma medida de desempenho específica, satisfazendo as restrições de precedência das operações, as restrições de capacidade das máquinas, os requisitos de tempo de processamento e de tempo de preparação, sendo os recursos as máquinas e as tarefas. O agendamento de tarefas pertence à classe de problemas NP-completos. Neste livro, para resolver problemas NP-completos, foram aplicados modelos de redes neurais artificiais. O objetivo principal é minimizar o tempo total ponderado de conclusão das tarefas no sistema, ou seja, minimizar o tempo de execução (tempo necessário para concluir todas as tarefas) usando o método heurístico, que fornece uma solução aproximada de alta qualidade em um tempo razoável.
