The Government of India (GOI) instituted the Mahatma Gandhi National RuralEmployment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in 2005 to address rural poverty andunemployment in India. This study will discuss transparency, accountability and theimpact of NREGA in selected districts of Rajasthan. The system of grievance redressalwas selected as the proxy for measuring the impact of the transparency initiative onaccountability. The broad aim of the research study is to evaluate the efficiency andeffectiveness of the Scheme as compared to its objective, critically assessing thepolicies, procedures and practices to make conclusions, assessing the performance ofvarious monitoring and implementing institutions under the Act, and documenting thebest practices and performances for replications.
