Zanieczyszczenie plastikiem jest spowodowane gromadzeniem się odpadów z tworzyw sztucznych w środowisku. Można je podzielić na plastikowe butelki, nakrętki, opakowania i pokrowce, muszle itp. Politereftalan etylenu (PET) jest termoplastem mającym wiele zastosowań, takich jak produkcja butelek, pojemników na żywność, włókien odzieżowych i przedmiotów termoformowanych. W 2016 roku wyprodukowano 56 000 000 ton PET, z czego 16 800 000 ton PET wykorzystano do produkcji samych butelek. Po zużyciu te butelki PET są wyrzucane do kurzu lub kanalizacji, co jest jedną z głównych przyczyn zanieczyszczenia plastikiem.
