O cultivo de arroz nas terras baixas da zona periurbana de Mahajanga é uma pequena operação familiar, produzindo cerca de 0,8 t/ha. Actualmente, a variedade Tahia é uma das variedades mais cultivadas nos dois locais, satisfazendo os critérios de escolha dos produtores e as expectativas dos consumidores. A melhoria da produtividade do arroz foi efectuada através da determinação das influências da idade de transplantação, da densidade de transplantação, do número de fios por tufo e da aplicação de fertilizantes. Os resultados obtidos mostram que as plantas transplantadas com uma densidade de transplante de 16 plantas por metro quadrado aos 8 dias após a sementeira tiveram rendimentos elevados em comparação com as plantas transplantadas aos 30 dias e com a prática dos agricultores de transplantar as plantas aos 30 dias após a sementeira com uma densidade de transplante de 26 plantas por metro quadrado. No ensaio com fertilizantes, a combinação de fertilizantes orgânicos e minerais resultou em rendimentos mais elevados.
